Botox
What is Botox?
Botox is the brand name for a drug made from Botulinum toxin type A, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
In controlled, small doses, it is used medically and cosmetically to temporarily paralyze or relax muscles.
Uses of Botox
1. Cosmetic Uses
Reduces fine lines and wrinkles (especially forehead lines, crow’s feet around eyes, frown lines). Gives a smoother, younger-looking appearance.
2. Medical Uses
- Chronic migraines (reduces frequency and severity).
- Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).
- Muscle stiffness/spasms (in conditions like cerebral palsy or stroke recovery).
- Overactive bladder.
- Eye conditions (strabismus/crossed eyes, eyelid twitching).
How Does Botox Work?
- Botox blocks signals from nerves to muscles.
- The targeted muscle can’t contract, which reduces wrinkles or relaxes stiffness.
- Effects usually last 3–6 months.
