Electrocautery
What is Electrocautery?
Electrocautery (also called cauterization) is a medical procedure that uses heat generated by electric current to burn, cut, or destroy tissue.
The heat is delivered through a small probe or needle.
It is commonly used in dermatology, surgery, and cosmetic treatments.
Uses of Electrocautery
- RF devices deliver controlled heat to the skin’s deeper layers.
- This heat causes collagen fibers to contract and triggers the body to produce new collagen over time.
1. Dermatology / Cosmetic
- Removal of warts, skin tags, moles, and small growths.
- Treatment of small blood vessels (telangiectasia, spider veins).
- Control of minor skin bleeding.
2. General Surgery
- Seals blood vessels during surgery to prevent bleeding.
- Removes or destroys abnormal tissue.
3. Gynecology / ENT / Other Specialties
Treats cervical erosions, nasal polyps, and minor lesions.
Procedure
- Performed in a clinic or hospital.
- Local anesthesia may be applied to minimize discomfort.
- The doctor uses a fine-tip electrode heated by electric current to target the tissue.
- Quick procedure, usually 10–30 minutes depending on size and number of lesions.
Benefits
- Quick and effective.
- Minimally invasive.
- Controls bleeding while treating.
- Low cost compared to other advanced techniques.
